Note:

• Adobe Acrobat reader is a free download, used to read pdf files
• You do not need Adobe Acrobat Pro to create a pdf; Open Office, Libre Office, and Microsoft Office can all save as a pdf.
  • When saving a PowerPoint as a pdf, instead of Save As pdf, I choose to Print and select pdf as my printer... this lets me select to print slides, notes, or handouts, including 3 to a page or 6 to a page handouts.
  • I also suggest when printing a PowerPoint as a pdf that you choose pure black and white.

Adobe Acrobat Pro is a commercial software item that needs to be purchased. The reason some people decide to buy Acrobat Pro, even though other programs can save as a pdf are as follows:

• You can drive your scanner from Acrobat to better control the creation of a pdf... including if you are appending to an existing file, color or black and white, etc.
  • Note: the Optical Character Recognition (OCR) Engine in Acrobat is about 95% accurate
• You can convert almost any file type to pdf
• You can convert a pdf into a Microsoft Word document
• You can combine existing files into one pdf
• You can annotate a document
  
• You can do minor edits to a pdf
  • Note: the font may not match exactly, and you really can't add new lines of text... just tweak what is there.
  • Editing and extracting text and graphics, Using commenting and annotation tools (pdf)
• You can prevent other people from copying, printing, or editing a document using passwords and policies
