Differentiate between a program, and a course, and a task
*Program= a student's 'major'
*Course=a 'class' a student takes that fits within the program, designed to teach tasks
A course should include several terminal objectives
*Task=activity within a class that has a start and stop point; can be described with objectives
A lesson should include several enabling objectives that conclude by addressing the terminal objective
Technical Education (WECM+Advisory Group)
Graduate's probable duties are identified (one action verb)
Duties are broken into tasks (action verb and object)
Tasks are broken into steps (typically a series of activities followed in order)
Plan
- Look up the learning objectives, as determined by the State
- Generate additional learning objectives you think need to be covered
- Working backward from these terminal learning objectives, determine any enabling objectives http://ww3.templejc.edu/prodev/common/cia-defined.html
- Generate a list of marketable skills; that is what tasks will your students do that they could put on a résumé?
A (bad) example of this might be an English major is taking a Chemistry class, and they learn about inventory and cleaning beakers, they might be able to get a job with those skills;
include technical and soft skills http://board.thecb.state.tx.us/reports/PDF/10796.PDF?CFID=75920892&CFTOKEN=79194126
- Determine your schedule… when you will introduce topics, when homework is going to be due, when tests occur, etc. I have attached a calendar that I use
- Develop your syllabus (check to see if your department has a master syllabus
- Contact information
- Office hours
- Books and Material used
- Schedule
- Grade scale
- Campus/Departmental Policies
- Personal policies
- Start developing your instructional material
- Start developing assessment material/methods to determine if students are progressing
- Start developing assessment material to generate grades based on enabling objectives (labs)
- Start developing assessment material to generate grades based on terminal objectives (tests)
- Start setting up D2L
- Set up a news item to introduce yourself to the students, and include items that they need up front
- Start uploading Content, items you will give your students
- Build your grade book
- Start creating assessments (discussions, dropboxes, quizzes) and tie to the grade book
- I always tell folks, you only have to be a week ahead of the students as far as D2L goes
