General Lab Directions
Note: There is not enough time in lecture to cover all the material; go over the reading material BEFORE you begin the lab
Note: Typically labs will require you to invest some time in the lab, outside of class lecture hours

•Note: Please read the related overview material before continuing
Check with your Instructor for due date, typically Friday, 11:59PM (see due dates)

 •NOTE:
    •Would you like a video on any lab 9 topic? Add to MUD 13.

   •Begin creating and testing the Lab (link to graphic construction requirements)
   •There is no quiz for this lab, but you should be able to answer questions concerning the topics covered in the Lab

You may download an acrobat or word processing document to help you with this.   

At the end of this process,
1) you will submit the web page files by zipping them, and placing them in the Desire2Learn dropbox area. Instructions on zipping are below.

     • Optional: Open/save an Acrobat pdf document to print with directions
       (get Adobe Acrobat Reader free, here)
     • Optional: Right click/save a Word docdocument to print with directions
     • Optional: Right click/save a Rich Text rtf document to print with directions

Part 1, Activity (100%):
You may download an acrobat or word processing document to help you with this.

 • Create a lab9 folder
 • Copy the image threshold-lab9.jpg below and place in the lab9 folders
    (threshold-lab9.jpg is text over a colored background)

   • Open the image
   • Using the Colors\Threshold tool, remove the color behind the text, leaving just black text on a white background.

   • Save the file in the jpeg format, calling it lab9.jpg

 • Zip the lab9 folder, rename it to yourname-lab9.zip and submit in the D2L Lab 9 dropbox

 

Part 2: Hands On (00%): Be prepared to discuss/demonstrate new tools and concepts used in this lab.

There is no quiz in D2L for this lab... however items from this overview will be included in test 3.

  1. What is the channels tab allow you to see? Where red, green, and blue occur in an image
  2. What is the alpha channel used for? Transparency
  3. What does the paths tool do? Allows you to select an area, and fine tune the selection
  4. What does the paths tab allow you to do? Recall a previously used path selection
  5. What does the History tab allow you to do? Undo past events, not just the last event
  6. What does the color levels tool allow you to do? Control the input and output tonal range with two sliders
  7. What does the color curves tool allow you to do? Control the input and output tonal range with a curved line
  8. What does the threshold tool do? Allows you to remove color, leaving black and white
  9. What does the fuzzy select tool do? The magic wand selects the same color range
  10. What can channels, paths, levels, curves, and threshold all allow us to do? Create better selections

Problems? Zip the entire folder and attach to an email:
       •Send the mail to your instructor, cc yourself
       •The subject line should include your name, your class, your section, and what you are submitting
       •Make sure you attach the zipped file

SUBMITTING THE LAB

In Windows, zip the entire lab9 directory, and rename to yourname-lab9.zip.
       •Example: yourname-lab9 or yourname-lab9.zip (if your extensions are visible)
Log into Desire2Learn, choose this class, choose Dropbox, and select Lab 9.
Browse to yourname-lab9.zip and upload it. (Scroll down to see detailed instructions)

To submit by Temple College Desire2Learn:
       •Log into D2L, scroll to the bottom, and choose the correct course
