To make a calculated grade field in D2L (to be able to show students an approx. GPA at a given point in the semester):

• In D2L choose Grades
• Then select Manage Grades, top left
• Add a "New Item" (just under the Dropbox link on the gray bar)
• Choose Calculated, near the bottom of the list
  
  
• Give it the new item a name meaningful to you, I use Approx GPA 1
  
• Then make sure Show Description is clicked so you can add a description.
  My description will say something like "Approximate GPA after labs 1-5 and tests 1-2"
  
  
• Then in the Grading area, select all of the items should have been completed at that time by placing a checkmark next to them.
• Choose Save, and you are done.

Using restrictions.

• If the approx. GPA is to display after test #2, I 'Create and Attach'
• Condition Type\Quizzes\Completed Quiz attempt

Next, Perhaps make a calculated GPA to use after each major test
Then reorder those so the correct Grade entry is  at the top of the list...

For example right after test 2 I move the Approx GPA 1 to the bottom of the Gradebook, and the Approx GPA 2 to the top

It is a bit of a pain the create the grade items to begin with, but there after it is just a matter of reordering for me, and I could probably get away with not even doing that, as the restrictions will keep the item from appearing until it can display a meaningful number.
